Artist’s Statement: Exploring Ephemeral Beauty Through Reverse Painting on Glass
Life is an intricate tapestry of moments—fleeting yet defining, momentary yet meaningful. These sparks in time shape who we are and tell our stories, weaving together our past, present, and the memories we carry with us. As I move through landscapes and observe the natural world, I see fragments of these passing experiences reflected all around. They are everywhere: in shifting light, in the movement of shadows, in a fleeting glance at a horizon. I wanted to capture these moments—to somehow distill them, so they could live beyond the brief instances that inspire them.
I found that the technique of reverse painting on glass does justice to these ephemeral fragments of life. Painting on the back of plexiglass, layer by layer, allows me to capture the spirit and luminosity of each scene. The unique “under glass” effect creates a remarkable depth in the colors, enhancing the link between the nature we witness and the nature we feel. By stacking two or three painted layers of plexiglass, each framed for reordering, I invite viewers to explore the evolving narrative within each artwork. Every time the layers are reordered, a new perspective emerges—each composition is as dynamic as the moments that inspired it.
Through the juxtaposition of contrasts—rules and omissions, acceptance and refusal—I encourage viewers to explore the boundary between memory and experience. In my nostalgic way, these works ask us to reflect on the beauty of impermanence, to recognize that we only truly live in the present. My hope is that each viewer will bring their own memories to my series, “Moments,” and rediscover the magic in life’s brief, yet eternal, sparks.
